I just got a text from my oldest brother, Charlie aka Carlos, wanting to know if my blog will be based on organic foods, healthy food, or what? So I thought it would be a good idea to let you know my food philosophy.
First off I like to mention I eat fairly healthy, most all of the time. On a day to day basis I eat salads, veggies, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and good healthy proteins. But I have the philosophy that I do not deprive myself from a cheat day every week, I am not going to count every calorie of every meal. With that in mind, I do think a well balanced diet is a general part of my everyday life. I do eat organic foods, but not all of the time. It is generally more expensive, and we are on a budget right now, being that we just both ditched our jobs to move to Washington to go into to debt getting more education.
I drink a lot of water.
Balance is my key word here.
I have never been a fan of processed foods, a lot of sugar, a lot of salt, and generally “fake” foods. I don’t buy pre made meals, pre packaged, or pre made much of anything. I don’t really like fast foods, or unhealthy things in the first place. In N Out does not count, I eat there.
I am a very open minded individual in general, but especially when it comes to food. Mostly if it is not out of a box. But I suppose you never know. I stay away from hydrogenated oils, high fructose syrups, sodium nitrites, and other unfriendly ingredients like those. I try to eat clean.
I make my own sandwich meat, as of late.
But I will eat fried chicken, corn bread, mac n cheese, green beans with bacon, and good BBQ, if the mood strikes.
It all revolves around balance.
I keep in mind the good fats and whole grains everyday. Avocados, cheese, nuts, and beans are on my food lists. Even on my cheat day, once a week, I eat veggies and fruits. My cheat day is really, at least one good desert a week, and one whatever floats my boat, dinner type meal a week. I may eat it in one day or split days, just depends.
Do you see a pattern here yet? BALANCE
I love pizza, especially from Apizza Scholls in Portland, Oregon, OMG!!!! And Napoli in Vallejo, California, another OMG!! I don’t eat pizza very often, but I do love it. I have made it at home from time to time, and that way I can control what kind I am eating. I can choose to go whole wheat, mozzarella cheese, and veggies, or I go all out white flour, meat, and cheese. It mostly depends on my mood and if I decide to make it my cheat day or not.
Again it goes back to eating mostly healthy, and to me, it does not mean I am wavering in taste. I think healthy food tastes good. I love broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, rainier cherries, figs, olives, almonds, brown rice, grainy bread, sourdough bread, artichokes, peaches, blackberries, and so much more. Do you see a pattern here yet again?
I love bacon, pot stickers, burgers, chow mein, hot dogs, cake, ice cream, tortillas, fried Mexican rice, red meat, any meat, pizza, some fried foods. But I choose to eat it in moderation.
So you will find a lot of healthy recipes on here, with not so healthy recipes. You will find deserts, which I love, but some may be healthy choices, some not. It will be a great BALANCE of foods to keep us cooking, healthy, and in our kitchens with our family being happy and enjoying some time together. So get in the kitchen, and cook people.
This is what works for me. I hope it helps you in your quest of a healthy lifestyle, or just gave you any ideas for your food philosophy.
